Math Anywhere expands through STEM Network support

The NW Washington STEM Network has teamed up with Snohomish STEM to support the expansion of Math Anywhere training. This includes the creation of virtual asynchronous professional development opportunities for child care providers along with the additional translation and distribution of Math Anywhere cards.

Originally established in 2017, Math Anywhere is a community-based project which aims to build positive math experiences outside of school. The beliefs of the training are that:

  • Math can be playful
  • Math-y ideas exist to explore all around us, wherever we go
  • Anytime is a good time to chat about math
  • Everyone has important math thinking to share

Through this newly developed opportunity, child care providers can earn either clock or stars hours by participating in this series of asynchronous trainings. By being able to access these trainings virtually and on their own time, they can better fit in with their personal schedules.

The expansion project also includes the additional translation of Math Anywhere cards, which are helpful in showing how math can be found in everyday activities. Cards have been developed in English, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Arabic.

Partners in this awesome project include the Educational Service District 112, who has developed the training and managed the card translation, and Child Strive, Opportunity Council, and Child Care Aware of Northwest Washington, who will be working with childcare providers to sign up for the trainings and will coordinate the distribution of the cards, prioritizing child care providers who register for the new asynchronous trainings.

“By teaming up with Snohomish STEM, our networks were able to better leverage Washington STEM grant funding to co-support this exciting work,” said Jenny Veltri, NW Washington STEM Director and Career Connect Washington NW Lead. “We know positive experiences in early numeracy are important in preparing for STEM careers and love Math Anywhere, developed by Molly Daley at the Educational Service District 112. This newly available delivery mode should make the trainings more accessible for child care providers both locally and statewide!”

“We are also excited about the expansion of translations available for Math Anywhere cards,” said Alyssa Jackson, Snohomish STEM Network Director and Career Connect Washington NW Lead. “Partnering with Child Strive, Opportunity Council, and Child Care Aware of Northwest Washington is invaluable for getting the word out regionally about the opportunity, along with the translated cards.”

NWESD Launches New STEM and Career Connected Learning Programs

The NWESD is hitting the 2022-2023 school year running with a number of new initiatives in Career Connected Learning (CCL) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) designed to help teachers prepare students to succeed in the 21st Century economy.

New web pages provide “one-stop shopping” for the region’s STEM and CCL initiatives and highlight opportunities for professional development, grants, resources and news. Additional initiatives include the hiring of two new NWESD specialists focusing on career exploration and career connected activities and an expanded Science Materials Center with additional kits available.

“We have an amazing support team at NWESD in Science, Match, Educational Technology and Career Connected Learning,” said Jenny Veltri, NW Washington STEM Network Director and Career Connect Washington NW Regional Co-Director. “Through combined efforts, we have been able to create great momentum to implement a variety of exciting initiatives that will serve the regions students in new ways.”

NWESD 189 STEM Initiatives & Career Connected Learning

NWESD 189  has a shared goal of preparing students across Northwest Washington with knowledge, skill, and inspiration to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

We want to inspire and equip future innovators with the skills and tools necessary to compete in a growing, global economy. Career opportunities in STEM fields are exploding, in fact, STEM occupations are projected to grow over two times faster than the total for all occupations over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Each initiative uniquely supports STEM skill development and education, making these subjects more accessible to students and ultimately building the capacity to solve the world’s future challenges through today’s learning.

And we're looking to partner with educators to host STEM Like Me classroom events, classroom tours, and other activities. Contact us to participate!
